Tile Installations

Maiolica refers to painted, tin-glazed earthenware ceramics. These originated in the Middle East in the tenth century, probably in imitation of early Chinese porcelain. By the time of the Italian Renaissance, maiolica had become highly-valued as a form of narrative and artistic expression.

In the past two decades, there has been a revival of maiolica in Europe and North America. Many ceramic artists and decorators are turning to the brilliant palette of maiolica for the wide range of colours and graphics it provides for use on pottery, sculpture and architectural wall tiles.

Matthias Ostermann offers a custom tile-painting service creating contemporary imagery on ceramic tile to meet architectural and interior design requirements.

Imagery can be conceived for large-scale murals or, on a smaller, domestic scale, for bathrooms, food-serving areas, furniture, fireplace surrounds or decorative panels.

Prices vary from $60.00 U.S. per square foot for repeated imagery to $140.00 +
per square foot for specifically conceived imagery, depending on the size and complexity of imagery to be negotiated.

  • Standard single tile format 6" x 6"
  • Prices for other formats/sizes or specialty work to be negotiated
  • Prices do not include federal or provincial sales taxes, shipping or installation costs
  • All colours and patterns are hand painted by Matthias Ostermann
